In short

Many benign skin lesions are harmless but can get in the way, rub against clothes and jewellery or feel bothersome. Examples are skin tags, raised moles and seborrhoeic keratoses. Scars that have become wide, tight or tender can sometimes be improved with a minor scar revision. Every lesion is assessed first, and if there is any doubt the tissue is sent for analysis.

Seek emergency care if

A lesion that grows quickly, bleeds or changes colour or shape should be assessed without delay. Read more under suspected skin cancer.

What happens at the examination

The surgeon examines the lesion and asks how long it has been there and whether it has changed. If anything suggests that the lesion may not be benign, it is managed as a suspected skin cancer instead.

  • Examination of the skin lesion or scar
  • Assessment of whether removal is appropriate
  • Information about the expected scar
  • Plan for tissue analysis when needed

Treatment options

The most suitable treatment is decided after an individual medical assessment.

Excision under local anaesthesia

The lesion is cut out and the skin is stitched. The incision is placed so that the scar is as discreet as possible.

Removal of skin tags

Small stalked skin tags can often be removed quickly under local anaesthesia.

Scar revision

A wide or tight scar can sometimes be excised and re-sutured for a smoother result.

After treatment

You receive a dressing and advice on wound care. Stitches are removed after 7–14 days depending on location. Stitch removal and free follow-up are included. The scar matures over several months.

Frequently asked questions

Will there be a scar?

All skin surgery leaves a scar. We place the incision so that it is as small and discreet as possible and explain the expected result before the procedure.

Is the removed tissue sent for analysis?

If there is any doubt about the nature of the lesion, the tissue is sent for analysis. A fee for tissue analysis may apply.

How much does it cost?

A consultation costs SEK 500. Removal of a lesion up to 2 cm costs SEK 3,900, and larger procedures SEK 3,900–10,900.
