Dr Elias Tsiolis is a specialist in general surgery and senior consultant surgeon. For more than 25 years he has worked clinically and operatively in Swedish healthcare, over 15 of them at consultant level. His background is broad, with a particular focus on minimally invasive surgery, advanced hernia surgery and reconstruction of the abdominal wall.

Long operative experience combined with medical leadership and healthcare development has given him a broad perspective on surgical care. Medical quality, patient safety and individually tailored treatment are at the centre.

Areas of surgical expertise

Dr Tsiolis has a special interest in modern, minimally invasive surgery: techniques that reduce tissue trauma, post-operative pain and recovery time.

• Advanced hernia and abdominal wall surgery. Repair of inguinal hernias, umbilical hernias, incisional hernias and complex abdominal wall defects, including abdominal wall reconstruction and treatment of rectus diastasis.
• Laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery. Many years of experience in keyhole surgery, including laparoscopic hernia repair with the preperitoneal technique (TEP).
• Gallbladder surgery. Investigation and surgical treatment of gallstone disease, with particular experience in laparoscopic gallbladder surgery.
• Proctological surgery. Treatment of haemorrhoids, anal skin tags, anal fistulas and other conditions of the rectum and anal canal, with a focus on tissue-sparing methods such as laser treatment.
• Day surgery and minor procedures. Individually tailored procedures with modern anaesthesia and pain management, aiming for safe treatment and a quick return to everyday life.

His experience also includes advanced laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery, emergency surgery and gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Tsiolis has held several senior management positions in Swedish healthcare:

• Former Head of Surgery (verksamhetschef), Karlstad–Arvika, Region Värmland
• Former interim head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Värmland
• Former Head of Healthcare Management Support and member of the healthcare management group in Värmland
• Former senior consultant and medically responsible surgeon at Kungälv Hospital, Västra Götaland Region

As head of department he worked on medical quality, patient safety, efficient care processes, a sustainable working environment and training for both qualified and trainee surgeons. At Kungälv Hospital he combined surgical leadership with advanced operative surgery.
